MFA Thesis Phenomenology Montana

On a festival run

An experimental documentary exploring deep time and phenomenology within the Montana landscape. Rooted in cognitive science, the film draws upon the frameworks of Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze, investigating how humans perceive time in quiet environments. Through long observational takes and haptic soundscapes, it bypasses traditional narration to create an immersive, sensory experience of duration.

Anáhata 2025

Experimental Mahakumbh · Shivratri Field Sound

On a festival run

An experimental visual exploration of the Vedic principle of fire, shot on location at the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj and Shivratri in Kashi. The film explores the physical and spiritual textures of these gatherings through pure, embodied observation and environmental sound, meditating on Agni as both elemental force and sacred presence.

Place 2024

Experimental Acousmatic Sound

Place is an exercise in sensory immersion and acousmatic listening. Bathed in the “olden light” of a setting sun, the film invites viewers to inhabit a space where the visual and the sonic blur. By isolating the everyday textures of water, distant traffic, and wind, the soundscape questions the certainty of what we hear. Is that the crunch of dry grass underfoot, or the intimate friction of chips being chewed? Place asks us to stop looking at the screen and start listening to the duration of the moment.

Frostscape 2024

Poetic Documentary Montana Winter Contact Mics

A poetic documentary filmed in extreme winter conditions that required rapid production pivots and the operation of heavy cinema gear across rugged terrain. Driven by a highly textural audio mix built around contact microphones, the film translates the biting cold and quiet isolation of the Montana landscape into a tactile viewing experience.

Shift 2024

Observational Yellowstone Deep Time

A roadside pullout. A semester of sunsets. The mechanical flow of traffic against the ancient stillness of the mountains. Shift is an observational documentary capturing seasonal and geological transitions in the Yellowstone ecosystem through long-term, single-location cinematography. By visiting the same space week after week, the film peels back the layers of the present to imagine the landscape as it existed before us: an experimental collage of light, cars, and the “deep time” of a single place.

Into the Thin Air

Lightbox Studio · Flagship Anthem

A cinematic love letter to the rugged landscapes and vibrant cultural pulse of Ladakh, from ancient cliffside monasteries to the kinetic energy of traditional festivals and frozen river treks.

The pacing relies on a rhythmic, sensory-driven edit and psychoacoustic sound design to immerse the viewer in the altitude and atmosphere of the Himalayas. Designed to capture the raw, unfiltered essence of the region.

2022 – 2023

Vertical Ice LMGA Climbing Festival

A high-adrenaline, documentary-style look into the Ladakh Mountain Guide Association's winter ice climbing festival, capturing the grit and extreme verticality of the sport. Sweeping high-altitude drone cinematography blends with tight, tactile action shots; a crisp color grade enhances the glacial blues and striking whites of the ice, while hyper-detailed sound design (the crunch of crampons, the strike of ice axes) drops the audience directly onto the mountain face.

Tsas & Dolkhar An Alpine Ambience

An atmospheric, slow-paced exploration of the Tsas and Dolkhar estate. The piece contrasts the expansive, snow-dusted autumn landscapes of Ladakh with the warm, meticulously crafted interiors of the property, moving fluidly between grand aerial perspectives and intimate culinary details. Warm color grading and quiet, naturalistic sound design translate the estate's grounded hospitality into a purely sensory digital experience.

Gliding on Natural Ice Royal Enfield Skara Campaign

A heartwarming, community-focused campaign highlighting a 15-day youth ice hockey coaching initiative in Skara, financed by Royal Enfield and implemented by LEDeG. The piece focuses on grassroots development of winter sports in Ladakh through an intimate, observational visual approach, capturing the resilience, joy, and camaraderie of young athletes learning to skate on natural ice rinks under the Himalayan sun.

Field Work · 2021 – 2022

Assam

Documentary Filmmaker · Aaranyak

During 2021 and 2022, I directed and edited documentary films for Aaranyak, one of India's leading biodiversity conservation organisations, based in Assam.

The work translated ecological research and human–elephant conflict data into clear, community-facing educational films. New cuts from this body of work are in edit now, and will be added here as each one is finished.

Post-Production & Haptic Sound

Edit · Sound · Color

My post-production philosophy is rooted in embodied knowledge. Specializing in high-resolution, DCI 4K (4096 × 2160) sequence workflows, the visual grade and edit are driven by the pacing and restraint of slow cinema.

Working primarily in Premiere Pro and After Effects, with color graded entirely in Premiere Pro, the focus remains on cinematic fidelity. The sound design process prioritizes the capture and mixing of haptic, environmental audio to build physical, highly textured soundscapes without relying on spoken exposition.

I am a filmmaker and editor working at the intersection of natural history, cognitive science, and experimental cinema. My practice combines a background in global conservation documentary with a phenomenological approach to visual storytelling, using sensory immersion and long-form observational cinematography to explore deep time, ecological narratives, and cross-cultural truths without relying on traditional narration.

Currently completing my MFA in Science and Natural History Filmmaking at Montana State University, where I also teach undergraduate and graduate students in technical media production. Influenced by the cinematic pacing of Andrei Tarkovsky and Abbas Kiarostami, my work emphasizes time perception and the physical presence of sound in natural environments.

Before Montana, I produced regional documentary work for Lightbox Studios in Ladakh, and prior to that directed conservation films in Assam with the NGO Aaranyak, translating ecological research and human–elephant conflict data into community-facing educational content.
